A meritorious student if happened to find himself among a group of back-benchers, I am sure even he will feel ignored, despite that he might have helped couple of them in their homework. And vice-versa.
It happens everywhere, all the time.
Also, the subject of "them" vs "us" is not welcomed even in Queer World as well. And unless Consititution and Religion treats each one of us on equal platform, we might continue facing it at different levels.
I would agree with Val, it must have been a casual and teasing gesture on a simple friendly ground. Have a heart :)..

A group behavior is always different compared to one-to-one interactions. Like you said, in this bizarre case of reverse discrimination (although that is too strong a word) they suddenly alienated you from "them" and you were the outsider. But what is homosexuality? It just boils down to a sexual preference, so simple. The bigger the deal we make out of it, the harder it becomes for those who don't understand it, to accept it. Let's face it, there are still a large number of supposedly educated people out there who think this is a fad/product of westernisation/disease/result of mommy issues and daddy issues.. but it all boils down to something so simple, it's a sexual preference. The more we simplify, the easier the acceptance will be.
Although I suspect your friends meant it lightly. :-)Thanks for sharing Ideasmith.

Being gay should only be a sexual preference and not a definition of who you are. The discriminated ,indignant mindset of a minority accepts the distinction somewhere. It resides deep inside. We reflect it in our reciprocal interactions. Makes me think hard, being homosexual/from a minority has no connection to being liberal in world view.It is just limited to the realisation of an instinct and coming to terms with that instinct.Still open to all other "conservative" /orthodox/closed mindsets!

Ouch !
