Destiny

“Aagar kisi cheez ko dil se chao to kaynat bhi usko tumse milane ki koshish me jud jati hai”- Shah Rukh Khan, film Om Shanti Om.

No, this isn’t a King Khan dedication, I don’t really like the guy. In fact, I thought the film was atrocious. But here I am, quoting one of its popular dialogues.

Do you believe in the words, “Meant to be”? Do you believe in “Destiny”?

To be downright honest, I don’t and yes, a lot of it has to do with past experiences and bitter ones at that. Ex-lovers, empty promises, failed relationships have left me so cynical in the matters of the heart that breaking another’s heart left no dampness on my conscious.

But a recent episode has left me wondering…

Movie Still from "Maine Pyar Kiya"

A good friend I have practically grown up with is about to get married. His fiancée is a girl with whom he fell in love with 9 years ago. They were neighbours and their story was a fine example of window-2-window romance. But as they say, destiny had other plans…

The girl was married off to an NRI and sent off to Europe. And all my friend was left with, were bitter sweet memories. Two years later the girl returns home, tortured & harassed by husband and in laws. Yet another case of dowry harassment, I got to hear.

For the girl’s emotionally bruised heart the only remedy that worked was her old window. And so began their love story once again.

Twisted, no..this so called Destiny? If the two were meant to be together then why did they have to part? Why the unnecessary suffering? Is a pure heart the only requisite to tilt the universe in your favour, really?

  1. this is such an “awwww” type story!

  2. I think I do believe…because my life led me to the spouse, how we got together, the everything…has to be destiny. *I* couldn’t have engineered it any better. Or any of it.

  3. I definitely believe in destiny. And as far as unnecessary suffering, one of my favorite bands sums it up in a song – “without the sour the sweet wouldn’t taste as sweet”. Nobody wants to suffer through empty promises and broken hearts, but I think it just gets us all to a point where we can truly appreciate the real thing when it finally comes along :)

Do we ever appreciate the “real” thing, I feel we only end up taking the other for granted. But anyway…

i strongly believe that we hold our destiny.
it’s all a matter of choice! what we choose becomes our destiny :-)
and i so agree with miss zero; life is full of duality. without bad; one cannot appreacite good.

Hmmm.. I think it’s a yes and no.. There are some things/situations that one cannot alter no matter how hard one tries – rather the circumstances may be such that you have to choose to act in a certain way.

Other situations are such that they alllow you have scope to make your own choice. (you may say even that is pre-destined)

And I would like to believe that at every moment the Universe is acting out a plan and things are falling into place. (even though I can’t always see it and have struggled with this for long)

    MJ,

Most definitely something called destiny! Most definitely also something called free will. Destiny often brings us to a cross road, but the choice to take that road always rests with us!

If there wasn’t destiny, we wouldn’t bump into some of the people that we do!

    My take:)
