The chances of marriage equality in Italy are a distant hope, but it doesn’t mean that the community won’t fight for it. With the Vatican and the Pope and the crazy orthodox Catholics, same sex marriage will not see the light of day any time soon.
Still, there are some people who believe and won’t back down on the fight for their rights. Arcigay, a non-profit organization for the LGBT community of Italy, recently released a video promoting same sex marriage.
In the video are two gay men who are seen sharing their lives together, rallying at pride and eventually getting engaged and married. At their wedding reception you see a lesbian, inspired by the gay friends, finally propose to her girlfriend. Edited beautifully to leave almost anyone with a sunny feeling in their heart, the video aims to portray equality, and not just marriage equality.
Same sex couples are not legally recognized in Italy, and even a civil union is a distant thought. According to Pope Benedict XVI, same sex marriage is one of the most “insidious and dangerous’” threats facing the world.
It’s a very sad state of affairs for a country as beautiful as Italy. Wouldn’t you love to retire in the Italian country side, eating delectable food and lovely wine alongside your hot Italian girlfriend/boyfriend?
It’s interesting how this post comes exactly 4 days after the screening of Luca Ragazzi’s ”Italy: Love it, or Leave it”. This came as a sort of sequel to “Suddenly, last winter”, and the boys were presenting the movie at the Teddy Awards of the Berlinale here.
They were met with critique, since their stand in the movie was about how horrible the situation in Italy is for gays/lesbians, and at the same time there is this sense of ‘Nationalism’ that leaving Italy would be a ‘black-listing’ for any true Italian.
Both films are equally bold and represent the vibrant palette of GLBT Italy – including the fact that Luca and his partner are in a very very long relationship, and are into film-making.
It’s a land full of hot men and women, but sadly the Vatican’s presence makes it miserable for LGBT folks.
Srini, I absolutely agree with you. I loved ‘Suddenly, Last Winter’ and seeing this video made me think of them!
Someone really needs glitter bomb the Pope.
