Jerry Brown 2355827c California Governor Signs Ban On Gay Conversion Therapy

California Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill to ban practices of conversion therapy on minors. California will become the first state to apply this ban when the bill goes into effect on January 1st, 2013.

Gov. Brown tweeted today ‘These practices have no basis in science or medicine, and they will now be relegated to the dustbin of quackery.’

The bill prevents all mental health professionals in the state of California from providing ‘reparative therapy,’ which aims at changing one’s sexual orientation, of a person under the age of 18.

In the past therapists have even resorted to electro-shock therapy and other unethical means to change an individual’s sexual orientation, many of which have resulted in suicides.

Can you imagine the look on Michele Bachmann’s face when she read this? We all know that the treatment center run by her family in Minneapolis has and probably still does practice reparative therapy.

Overall, this is good news for California and yet another win for the LGBT community.
