Happy Gay May!

After Lesbian Visibility Day in April, May is filled with important days that remind us of the strength we have in our diversity.

The month of May is special- even more so busy for content creators around and within the LGBTQIA+ movement around the world. After Lesbian Visibility Day in April, May is filled with important days that remind us of the strength we have in our diversity.

On 22nd May, we have Harvey Milk Day that hopes to celebrate the life and contribution of Harvey Milk to the LGBTQIA+ movement in America and around the world. Milk was the first openly gay elected official in San Francisco, giving way to the entrée of more queer individuals to become leaders and carriers of voice around the world.

From the 7th to the 17th of May, we observe the importance of having equality within families for individuals and their identities. Families are the most important microcosm of human life- one that is most influential in in the primary stages of our life, socialising us into how the world works. It is then, important for these families to be inclusive and supportive of individuals with alternative identities. The day also tries to steer the conversation to family structures that are different from the heteronormative ones we see on a daily basis- to families with queer families and the need for their inclusion with any other family.

The star event of the month is The International Day against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia on the 17th of May. The day came into observance to coordinate grassroots efforts of various organisations to bring attention to LGBT issues and to promote and lobby for the recognition of queer people around the world.

Ending the month long observance with Pansexual and Panromantic Visibility Day on the 24th of May with a resolve to open up more conversations on the existence of pan-folks within the spectrum- to educate, empower and create a space of diversity and growth for everyone.

Gaysi is curating a number of pieces- through illustrations, erotica, fictional pieces and informative pieces as a journey into the month of May. Watch out for a piece from our Queer Mythology series, a two-part erotica, deep personal accounts and a whole range of quirky stories from the team- what a gay May!

We also encourage you, our dear readers, to openly explore the themes and send in your thoughts as well. To contribute, please write to gaysifamily[at]gmail[dot]com.
