Hi,
I'm a PhD student and a good friend of mine is working on queer cultures in Dubai and the Middle East is looking to speak to a few lesbians in Dubai or elsewhere in the UAE. I recall a couple of articles on this website having featured couples from Dubai and I was wondering if anyone had any leads? If you do, could you maybe email me on krishnan.sneha@gmail.com?

Thanks

If the recent TV9 episode is any indication, we need to have more LGBT-related activities in Hyderabad. Major South Indian cities like Chennai and Bangalore have been having pride marches for the past few years and Kerala held it's first ever pride march in 2010. Though pride marches are attended by only a fraction of the queer community, they are great ways to create awareness among the community, local media and general public.

Hyderabad is yet to have a Queer pride march and it is time! We hear there are some excellent groups that offer HIV/AIDS outreach to MSM populations and also some very strong feminists groups that work on queer issues. This is a call to all the queer groups, activists, allies, community folks of/from Hyderabad to have a discussion and help launch Queer pride in Hyderabad. You can post your ideas, suggestions, comments, contacts. Please invite your friends to join the discussion.

Let us make it happen!

Are you referring to the butch-femme culture within the Lesbian community? I can't speak for gay men since I was never a part of that community, but I will say that a lot of people, men and women, who identify as "queer" or "trans" do so because they do not believe in the gender binary. And couples may seem to have a butch-femme thing going on from the outside, but a lot of what matters is the power dynamic within that relationship, which we often can not see from the outside.

i have often seen and read the existence of a relationship between gender nonconformity and
homosexuality. But i wonder why does it exist! Any clue ??
and i have also realized that gay male gender nonconformity is much more coherent than lesbians. Would you guys agree ??

ps: was thinking of writing a post on the same, but got utterly confused thinking what i know and what i dont ! :|

I never did eyebrows. The idea of looking permanently alarmed is quite frightening.

My upper lip, legs, arms and underarms get de-haired quite frequently and I suppose it doesn't matter to me in the least bit if the women I am attracted to do or do not as well. Though de-hairing underarms may just provide easier access.

Down south? I have to trim. regularly. with my trusted bikini trimmer. never leave it behind. But this is the one part of the body, as intimate as it is, that I'd like to be surprised with. When I go down on a woman, I'd much rather it be because of I want to go down on her so it becomes irrelevant how smooth or hairy her vayjayjay looks :)

Anurag, I think that's really brave of you! It's something I'd certainly like to try, and in a sense I already am, with the now-hairy arms I have. But legs and armpits get noticed and I've certainly been afraid in some ways, of letting them get to their natural hairy state. I might, however, now be inspired to try, I think.

A couple of years ago, shortly after coming out, I decided to stop shaving my body hair. The only thing I cut occasionally is the hair on my head and I still pluck my eyebrows... but I don't remove body hair. I don't like the prickly feeling when it grows back, and I also don't like that I am expected to shave as a woman... so I don't. I also really like the way hairy armpits and legs look. It doesn't bother me when women do shave, but it definitely makes me happy when I see other hairy women. When I see a woman with no body hair it is a 50/50 guess as to whether she has made the active choice to shave, but if I see a woman with body hair I almost certainly know that she actively chose to keep her body hair - considering we live in a society where we are told we have to start shaving at puberty. The reason I got the guts to stop shaving in the first place is because I saw another queer desi with hairy armpits and I thought it looked good on her.

Hm...interesting question!

I'm pretty picky about myself - I don't really care much about waxing my arms, but pretty much everything else...maintenance is a must. Eyebrows, upper lip, underarms, legs...all of those need to be done regularly. As far as down there, I've waxed it before, but it's kind of expensive and awkward, so I tend to sort of shave and trim and keep it neat.

As far as what I'm attracted to? I don't think it really makes much of a difference to me. I mean, I'd probably be concerned if my girlfriend could win a moustache competition against my grandpa, but otherwise I feel like the sexiest thing is a woman with confidence, and whatever it is that makes her happy will probably make me happy too :)

Okay so at the expense of sounding really fussy; I like my women clean and hair free. Especially the arms, under arms and legs. Other body hair is doable. As for down there, if not clean...well a trim is desired. I usually do go for the "hoity-toity" types, so the "hair" issue barely ever arises.

And I am the sorts who practices what she preaches, so I do all of the above. Plus I also believe; to get HOT you gotto be HOT! :D

So, this comes from an odd conversation I was having with a bunch of gay men (on a gay punting outing in Oxford where I was the only lesbian. Go figure!) about body and facial hair. So why do women shave off every inch of hair on their bodies and wax off everything but eyebrows off their faces? I figured I didn't know. Me personally, I like what they say in the vagina monologues: if you like vaginas you gotta love hair. But it's not just pubic hair I'm talking about here, so I'd like to extend that and say, if you love bodies, you have to love hair. I don't see a little hair on arms and legs as a turn off at all. It makes no difference usually to how attracted I am to someone.

So, has any of you ever considered stopping to de-hair (yes, there's a better word for this somewhere) your legs/arms/face? I've stopped waxing my face and never did eyebrows. I also have stopped shaving/waxing my arms. I'm curious what people think.

The way I deal with such people is this;

1. How important they are to me?
If it is someone close to me, lets say a friend/cousin/family then I will do my best to reason with them. Giving my own example of a "gay person", after all they do love me for what I am. But I try never to push or enforce my thoughts.

2. If its someone I can't give a shit about.
Well the line pretty much says it all. :D

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO:

Register: We've expended a whole lot of blood, sweat and tears to get this forum up & running. It is only ever going to be as successful as you make it. Register an account and start posting & sharing. Registration will only take a minute (probably less!) and we promise to never share your email address or to spam you. Feel free to use your own name or whatever name you feel comfortable with.

Do Unto Others As You Would Have Others Do Unto You: Simply put - be nice. If you disagree with someone, there's no need to call them names or call their views stupid. You're certainly not going to change their mind with that attitude. Having said that, if someone is call you names or calling your views stupid, then report them to us.

Be Generous: The forum was created to help you share your stories, your angst & your questions with other gaysis. If there's something you think others should know - whether it's a gay friendly restaurant to eat at or a homophobic shop to avoid, share it here with others. Other things you can share - names of books, movies, TV shows with gay characters, how you dealt with homophobia, how you came out of the closet, your first love, your favourite food - whatever floats your boat!

Have fun: Life is too short to be grumpy & depressed. Enjoy this space & help others enjoy it too.

WHAT YOU SHOULD NOT DO:

Homophobia: Needless to say, this is a deal breaker. If you take the time, to come onto the forum, register & then spout homophobic remarks - you need therapy & a life. This is a safe and kind space. Like it or leave it.

Copy Paste: Please do not post things here that you have not written. If you do paste something interesting you've read, remember to give credit where credit is due. Posts that have plagiarized content will be deleted & your account will be suspended if this happens repeatedly.

Trolling: This is partly covered under Homophobia, but you can be gay-friendly & still be a troll. Really, take your malice somewhere else.

Nudity: We're adults, but a lot of us are prudes. Avoid using naked pictures of yourself (or anyone else) as your avatar - even if you're super hot!
