Is being gay incidental or fundamental? Is it who we are or is it just a part of who we are. Is it something that defines us or helps describe us?
Most in the straight world don’t wear their sexual preferences on their sleeves, when we meet them, see them, work with them we don’t think of what or who they want to do in their bedrooms. Then why should we allow our sexual choices to define us? When you think of Lata Mangeshkar, you don’t think of how she likes to perform in the bedroom. Then why when you think of Elton John, one of the first things you’d say is ‘gay’??
Are we ourselves to blame? Have we made our sexuality more important than it actually is? I asked myself - if I were to choose five words to describe myself, would gay be one of them? Frankly i don’t know. I would describe myself as young, creative, compassionate, a good son, a good brother, a loyal friend...gay? Don’t know.....what five words would you choose?
