Kari, a graphic novel by Goa-based artist-writer Amruta Patil. It’s very easy to fall in love with Kari, because her character is etched as a ‘boatman’ – a rescuer of lost souls – who’ll guide them, hold their hands, listen and love, and want nothing in return. As the lines above indicate, Kari’s not straight, either.
In our seventh year, we bring another evening of voices that challenge the ways in which we imagine our sexualities, genders and desires!
Set in contemporary Iran, A Separation is a compelling drama about the dissolution of a marriage. Simin wants to leave Iran with her husband Nader and daughter Termeh. Simin sues for divorce when Nader refuses to leave behind his Alzheimer-suffering father. Her request having failed, Simin returns to her parents’ home, but Termeh decides to stay with Nader.
This event is a discussion group among family members, friends and allies of LGBTQ South Asians. Through dialogue and stories from parents, siblings, LGBT members and allies, this space will create a powerful opening towards greater acceptance and understanding, and unconditional love for LGBTQ members within the South Asian community at-large. In other homophobic and not so shocking news, Governor Georgiy Poltavchanko signed a homophobic law banning the so-called “propaganda of sodomy, lesbianism, bisexualism and transgenderism, and pedophilia to minors.” The law will go into effect in 10 days.
