“Outsourced”: The Media’s Manipulation

Rashmi mentioned to me that a recent episode of Outsourced was particularly troubling, so after I watched it we decided to each write about it. Gay Mahatma? So What!

Thousands of books have been written on Mahatma Gandhi with each new one claiming to have discovered an unknown facet of his eventful life. When reviews of Pulitzer prize winner Joseph Lelyveld's "Great Soul: Mahatma Gandhi and His Struggle with India" hit the newspapers in England and US claiming that the book says Gandhi was a bisexual and had a German-Jewish bodybuilder lover in Hermann Kallenbach it created immediate sensation.

Public Protest Against TV9 : New Delhi

As concerned citizens, members of the queer community, and other human rights activists, are deeply disturbed by TV9 Telugu channel’s 22nd Feb 2011 broadcast that violated the basic rights and dignity of the LGBTQI community. Using private pictures, hidden-camera footage, and phone conversations, this broadcast made public the identities of some gay men without their consent. This was grossly invasive, unethical and violated the basic regulations of the National Broadcasting Association.

Another Discriminatory Video From TV9! Please Flag!

This video refers to sex with Transgenders (TG) as a bad habit destroying life, Youth welcoming AIDS, Unnatural and a reason for AIDS. It also refers TGs as ONE BY TWOs (a derogatory word for TGs in AP, India), ugly and repulsive and says they en-cash the unnatural desires in some people.

QAM Report On TV 9 Intervention, Mumbai

The day started at a hectic pace at THE HUMSAFAR TRUST. Amidst all the din of daily work we were sending out mails , drafts of "letter of protests". There were organisation letters as well as individual ones to be printed . There were flowers to be purchased and envelopes to be filled . We were all ready to counter TV9 against their reckless reporting of the social networking site Planet Romeo in Hyderabad.

How Many More?

For cheap sensationalism, TV9, a Telugu channel carried out a slanderous and malicious story outing young gay men from Hyderabad. Extremely personal information of these men, including physical statistics, sexual preferences and positions were revealed, blatantly violating their privacy and dignity.

TV9’s Homophobic Coverage

At Gaysi we are deeply disappointed by TV9's homophobic story "Gay Culture Rampant in Hyd". We demand TV9 *To take down the video from TV9's Youtube channel immediately and * Release a statement promising better sensitivity to LGBT issues, in the future.

377 Case Developments

This is to inform everyone that there has been a significant development in the S.377 case in the Supreme Court today. All the final applications for interventions by parties interested in the Delhi High Court verdict came up before a bench comprising of Justices Singhvi and Ganguly. These included a few against the Delhi High Court verdict, but also for the first time, applications from civil society supporting it.
