Well in the good sense so fret not Gaysi supporters. And let’s rejoice with open mouths *…pants..err…let us not get carried away just yet* our very first main stream media outing. A big shout out to Time Out (New Delhi) for their forever Queer-friendly attitude.
Being our radical queer desi selves can be exhausting, and it’s always a positive thing to be intentionally taking care of our selves and our minds. When I first came out, roughly four years ago, I was aching so much to become an activist that I really wore myself out, as well as everyone around me! I now have a long list of conditions I have to give myself in order to be radical but still enjoy the world we are currently living in.
I am watching and revolting at the latest media spectacle in the United States: Gaybie suicides. My first thought is “Great! The mainstream media finally woke up to a problem that has existed since before I was born. I don’t want to hear about it. Let me get back to my life.”
There’s been much internet-related gay news this week. Some of it, the first of its kind, and some, downright sad. Eighteen year old Tyler Clementi, a freshman at Rutgers University, New Jersey, committed suicide is thought to have jumped off the George Washington bridge after a video of him being intimate with another man went viral on the internet.
Two gay men have broken the record for the world’s longest kiss, shattering the previous best of 32 hours, 14 minutes and 7 seconds by Nikola Matovic and Kristina Reinhart in 2009. The attempt by Matty Daley and Bobby Canciello lasted a total of 33 hours.
The DADT policy was enacted to allow gay and lesbian individuals to serve in the military as long as they did not disclose and/or engage in homosexual acts. Effectively, it meant they had to remain in the closet and/or celibate. Failing which these individuals could be discharged from the military.
Many gay persons have probably been left by their partners for people of the opposite sex, much like the subject of this piece of news. But our Mr. X went one step further and filed a case against his former partner, Y.
Like many folks in and out of India, I grew up watching Indian cinema both of the regional and Bollywood variety. And whenever a choreographed dance/dream sequence burst out on screen – Oh yeah! My imagination ran wild! My Queer identity without any rules or societal structures to mimic – mapped itself gloriously onto the coy yet vibrant romance that played itself out in booty busting technicolor.
At Gaysi, we love Prince Manvendra Singh Gohil. In fact we believe there could be no other better mascot representing the Desi-Queer community, at home and internationally. Anything said in his praise would still fall short in comparison to ground reality, so it’s best to just leave such things at the mercy of the mighty Google search. Simply type in his name and in matter of minutes you would have found yourself a new Idol (if he isn’t already).
But (yes there’s always one these lying around somewhere)….his recent media byte at the launch of his magazines targeting the Gay community has got me thinking a little tangent.
I woke up one morning fully expecting to read on Indian News Sites that the Delhi High Court would have ruled that Article 377 of the Indian Penal Code will not be changed. That was not the case.
All the way across in Germany, the city of Cologne prepares to host its 8th quadrennial athletic event for gay and lesbian athletes. The city is home to Europe’s biggest gay and lesbian sport club, SC Janus. Over 10,000 participants from 70 countries are expected to take part in the games which include a mix of mainstream sports like soccer along with some unconventional ones like transgender ballroom dancing and cheerleading.
Amusing, no doubt. But a harsh reality of the times we live in. Now if only love could be a little more appealing. …
