I hope you’ll take 20 minutes to watch this documentary, DESIGIRLS!, by Ishita Films. It’s certainly engaging & left me wishing there was more than just 20 minutes to this documentary.
Watching people come out of the closet or talk about the reactions that they faced from family and friends, never ceases to move me and I always find myself tearing up. No matter what your background or where you’re from, this experience has so much in common universally – it’s pretty amazing.

Thanks for sharing this broom.
It is always interesting to know about people’s experiences, and of course if one is listening to stories of people from similar communities, one can relate more..
For example -the narration of one woman where she can only express a part of herself to her parents -the loving child.. but not her as an individual /lesbian. This is something a lot us in the closet face and eventually hope to break through..
@deepseas: It’s also so sad that most parents think that lesbian != ‘loving child’
I felt it could have been longer too. very empowering. Thanks for sharing Broom.
This documentary (and this website) really opened my eyes to the fact that I’m not the only queer desi girl around. Stupid as it sounds, I honestly never really took to the interwebs and poked around because any media representation of gay South Asians tends to be about gay men, and never about lesbian women. And of course, I think there are all sorts of reasons for that involving privilege and the power that a lot of Indian families hold over their daughters’ heads. I have to say, I love this documentary for portraying that honestly and not trying to either water it down or dramaticize it. I’m a college student in a small town, and I’ve never, ever met another queer desi before. And reading/watching about the fact that we EXIST is a comfort within itself 🙂
