When I first went back to India after living abroad, it struck me how affectionate men were with one another in India. I know it’s a sweeping generalization to say that a majority of Indian men are homophobic, but also sadly quite true – so it’s all the more ironic how their behaviour towards each other borders on being homoerotic, almost.
So let’s start a weekly series of Bollywood songs with our heroes professing undying ‘friendship’ for their male friend.
(It’s all very tongue in cheek so please keep your outrage & offence in check.)
Let’s kick off the series with the title song from ‘Ram Avatar’. It’s perfect with slow motion runs towards each other, long lingering embraces, romantic violin playing, longing gazes towards each other, rolling down the hills in an embrace (yes, really) & some almost there kisses… Perfect!
Hahaha. What a perfect video to kick off this series with! I was secretly hoping they’d kiss at 3:56 or 5:33…and why not with such Brokeback Mountain like location.. 😉
I find Indian straightmen much more vulnerable and insecure on the sexuality front than in the US. Ironically, I also see them choose with utmost pride to share a bed with their Indian fellow travelers or friends with very less inhibition, as if it was downright natural to do so. I think its time for a real Indian Brokeback with a Bollywood finish – “Living happily ever after”.
I could not stop laughing. My favourite bit was from 5.33 onwards with them rolling down the hill. I kept wondering if they realised how homoerotic that was while shooting for the song.
This is very true and I agree how men are affectionate towards other men. It bothers me so much when such men try to dominate woman in the name of straight marriage. I am glad you shared this video depicting almost an homoerotic scene which will be a classic one to show the men who take woman for granted and ill treat them 😉 I know I am so against men with full of grudges, but I do respect those kind men who knows to treat woman well.. So this comment is for the deserving asian men.
Yep…outright funny…….Left me wondering, how i never noticed this kind of scenes…Ofcourse my Bollywood exposure is none..but am sure, there are kollywood equivalents…Yet can’t recall even one at the moment..Perhaps, the kollywood equivalents have less close-up scenes??

Hmm..i used to be one of them, just 5-6 years ago….Whoa, its been a long time… I am fired up with one whole set of questions now.. Will try to sit and writ e them down and see if i can get a post…
@Anand : When I commented I had only hetero men in my mind. As Brrom mentioned, it feels totally ironical that these men are comfy sharing the bed (which I would defer as being completely confident of their sexuality) but they end up being totally hompphobic. Just beats me.
