Book Review : Hostel Room 131

And this time we are getting it correct – Its R Raj Rao!

Funny, honest and dramatic. A great novel written ever so elegantly. Being my first ever desi queer book,I found it amusing yet knowledgeable. It was cathartic at times and the love amongst the protagonists almost left me in tears. Yet I read it on only to complete it in a straight 72 hrs and with a feeling of “happily ever after”. He writes about the destiny of falling in love and being sucked up into it. He talks about the pains and sacrifices one goes through to regain the lost love. He talks about destiny working its way to cause havoc or a miracle. Written in a very irreverent style, yet brutally honest, he delves into the complex emotions of two souls who are separated by stupid whims of society – family included. A great book for anyone – queer identified or not, desi or not!

On a recent visit to Pune, everyone who appeared to sport a beard and wear  a spectacle seemed like R Raj Rao to me. I had seen a picture of him recently on the Indian Express under the sexuality section(yes! a full page dedicated to sexuality in a mainstream daily’s supplement) where he had been interviewed about his book. Wandering around the ubiquitous shopping malls in Indian cities, I see this book everywhere- at crossword, at landmark, you name it.

Now go buy your copy. While,  I need to go get his earlier book, Boyfriend.

Rashmi grew up in India and now she enjoys her time living in one of the queerest places in the world. She started transitioning a while back and is gradually coming out to people she thinks are cool enough for her. She enjoys discussing any topic under the sun and has an opinion about anything and everything. She thinks of herself as someone who can only hold intelligent conversations with people, when in reality she is totally insane and crazy, not to mention she has been highly hormonal recently. *GRIN*
