Chennai’s International Queer Film Festival Is Back!

It’s that time of the year, folks. The heat is rising! The pavements are melting! …and amazing queer events just keep coming up!

Madras is back with the ever popular Reel Desires: Chennai International Queer Film Festival 2014. In collaboration with Goethe Institut/ Max Mueller Bhavan Chennai and other local LGBTQ allies/support groups – This is a year to showcase groundbreaking, hard hitting and always entertaining cinema to the old and nouveau cinema goers of Chennai in the wake of IPC 377 and the shenanigans of the ongoing elections.

I saw some great movies last year at the Reel Desires Film Festival, met some very interesting folks and came away more enriched about the queer scene in the South than ever before. I’ll be there again this year – hopefully lending more support and getting to see some of you there.

Before things get rolling – We have a Call For Submissions for the film festival. So if you think you have something that needs to be seen, showcased or witnessed – Give it a go. Give us a heads up too! We’d love to feature you on Gaysi as well.

Reel Desires: Chennai International Queer Film Festival 2014 will be held in the last weekend of July at the Goethe-Institut/ Max Mueller Bhavan in Chennai. The festival is brought to you by Orinam and Goethe-Institut, in partnership with other local collectives working on gender, sexuality, health, human rights and culture.

Reel Desires 2014 comes in the wake of India’s Supreme Court decision that re-criminalised same-sex love, and homophobic/transphobic moves by many countries around the world. While queer and trans* collectives examine legal and political options to reclaim our dignity and rights as citizens, we also seek our place in this world through participating in and producing cultures that reflect both the universality and specificity of our experiences.  We at Reel Desires invite films that augment and enrich these cultures.

This year, we are particularly interested in shorts, documentary and feature film submissions that explore the intersections among queerness and other forms of marginalization, including those based on gender, disability, immigrant/refugee status, caste, religion, socio-economic class, age, and race/ethnicity.

Reel Desires, an all-volunteer effort, typically runs for 12-14 hours of screening, spread over two or three days, and includes panel discussions and Q&A with local and visiting film-makers.
