Cine Labia’s Tribute To Rituparno Ghosh

Cine Labia is back after a long break!!
… and we are back with a tribute to the acclaimed filmmaker Rituparno Ghosh

Chitrangada: The Crowning Wish
Directed by Rituparno Ghosh
2 hrs 15 mins/India/2012/ Bengali with English subtitles

Rituparno Ghosh’s last release Chitrangada is based on Rabindranath Tagore’s dance drama centered on a mahabharat character, a Manipuri princess who was brought up as a son by the King and who after meeting Arjun desired to reincarnate in her primordial gender state. Rituparno understandably dabbled with Tagore’s own interpretation of the Kurup-Surup dichotomy and re-interprets within the rubrics of Gender identity and more importantly the question of ‘Wish’.

Rituparno Ghosh, tried to put up a slice of life topped with contradictions and anomalies – he succeeds fairly and Chitrangada is an important film in Indian cinema for raising the doubts, contradictions and confusions about identity – sexual and/or gender.

“The film is about acceptance of a person’s identity… It isn’t just about sexuality or one’s image with which he is identified,” Ghosh said
