Two gay men have broken the record for the world’s longest kiss, shattering the previous best of 32 hours, 14 minutes and 7 seconds by Nikola Matovic and Kristina Reinhart in 2009. The attempt by Matty Daley and Bobby Canciello lasted a total of 33 hours. The two who are students at the college of New Jersey streamed their attempt over the internet and gathered a fair deal of publicity before they began their attempt, including a Facebook page and a website. The record has never been held by a homosexual couple, and Matty and Bobby planned to change that. The two have stated that they are not a couple and merely attempted the record to increase acceptance of LGBT people and raise awareness about homophobia.

Elsewhere, thousands and thousands of people took part in a protest in central London, in response to the Pope’s homophobic comments and his statement that condoms helped in the spread of AIDS and other STDs rather than curbing them. The protesters were armed with blown up condoms and banners including “Fuck the Pope … But wear a condom” and “Jesus had two daddies”.

Within the next few hours the US senate will vote on a bill which seeks to overturn the ban on homosexual soldiers in the Army. The provision is to be added to the National Defence Authorisation Act. Senator John McCain has promised to draw out the proceedings as long as possible through a filibuster, in order to obstruct the ban from being repealed. Recently Lady Gaga held a rally in Maine in support of overturning the ban.
