Politics of the Pope

Pope Benedict XVI’s resignation came as a huge shock to the entire world. While the unending war between the Catholic Church and the LGBT community is nowhere close to a conclusion, the Vatican’s power is still very strong and wide spread. And yet, small battles are being won on the topic of marriage equality.
For every religious country like Uruguay and Colombia that stands its ground for equality, there are other religious countries that openly violate human rights, the biggest proponent of which being Ghana with its ‘kill the gays” bill. This is where the power of the Catholic Church is truly scary. As is pointed out in this Huffington Post article, one of the people being considered to replace is the Pope is Cardinal Peter Turkson, one of the biggest defenders of the “kill the gays” bill.
Pope Benedict XVI’s resignation is nothing but a political move to give this position a more appealing face. The hatred and homophobia will continue to grow so long as soon to be ex-Pope Benedict is still in a position of power.
