Queer Support Groups Yaariyan & Umang Bring To You “The Acceptance Meet 2017” This 15th August

The Acceptance Meet is an annual event that brings together Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ), their family (close and extended), colleagues, friends and supporting allies. It is a space for them to come and share their stories and journeys of acceptance. For the fourth year, The Humsafar Trust’s initiative, Yaariyan and Umang in collaboration with other queer groups- Queer Adda, QGraphy, and QKnit India is organizing this event on Independence Day (August 15, 2017) with Canada Consulate General and Youth Lead as principal partners. The aim is to pave the way for acceptance and rational attitudes toward Indian LGBTQ, particularly the youth.

What to expect?
This year our theme is ‘Every life matters’ to highlight the increasing number of suicide amongst LGBTQ youth. Counseling instances speak a lot on the increasing number of suicides in the LGBTQ community. We begin with a poetry reading/ skit on LGBTQ and suicide. We then move on to an informal discussion with LGBTQ people and allies. Finally we have a panel discussion on suicide and how the LGBTQ community needs acceptance to curb this trend.

Who are we?
Yaariyan is a support group for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) youth. We are the youth wing of The Humsafar Trust which has been working for the health and human rights of sexual minorities since 1994. Yaariyan has an online platform reaching out to 6000+ people, organizing offline events and facilitating LGBTQ youth access to health and social support.

Whom to go with?
If you are LGBTQ or a supporter, come by yourself or bring your parents, siblings, relatives, friends, teachers, colleagues, bosses, or anyone who has ACCEPTED you, or who needs help to ACCEPT you just as you are.

Why should you come?
This opportunity can be used to either sit and observe or ask questions or mingle with those who are accepting. We will also have special experts from various fields who can address your loved ones and you fears and worries (including mental health experts, an HR professional and an Equal rights activist).
