About a year ago, I was surfing for the movie adaptations of the book Carmilla by J. Sheridan Le Fanu and I stumbled across this wonderful web series called Carmilla. Boy, oh boy did I feel giddy with joy or not? Don’t ask. In the past there have been attempts but nothing comes anywhere close as this series. It sets out to tell the classic tale with a modern twist. It follows in the same vein as the award winning Lizzie Bennet Diaries and uses a series of logs to tell the story from the perspective of Laura Hollis (Elise Bauman).
Rundown: Silas University student Laura begins investigating when her roommate vanishes on a drunken night out at a frat-party, while she is still calling people for help, a one sullen and indifferent Carmilla (Natasha Negonvalis) walks in owning ex-roommates stuff. Soon, Laura’s friends aid her in her investigation, and Laura begins to unravel the mysteries at the goings-on at her college, and just exactly what the nocturnal Carmilla has to do with them. We know right off that Carmilla isn’t going to be an innocent person, but the web series allows a fresh and truly intriguing take on this little-known story.
Among other things, the show’s assets are; its female-heavy cast, and thoughtful portrayal of sexuality and fluidity. There is Perry (Annie Briggs) & LaFontaine (Kaitlyn Alexander), they have a wonderful friendship and there is Danny (Sharon Belle) who also has a crush on Laura. Nothing needed to be ‘stated’ and that was amazing.
So, have fun while you catch up on those adventures at Silas University. When that is done, you might also want to watch Carmilla spoofs. Am glad they exist (spoofs) and obviously are for all those people who can’t get enough of the series. By now I must sound like someone who is super excited and just can’t stop yapping but you can’t blame a girl for trying to keep the show loved just so they have another season or entirely different series as long as Negovanlis is in it. Hehehe.
PS: The book itself is open and easily available on many online libraries, please do read.
