The Solidarity Song highlights not only the uniqueness of this country and the pride we feel, but also the challenges that lie ahead. The message is: it’s time. It’s time to change. It’s time to right the wrongs. It’s time to be open about who we are. It’s time to pursue what we want. It’s time to put fears aside. It’s time to ACT. The song tackles many issues: corruption, gender issues & rape, environment, education, LGBT rights, and urges the listener to take progressive action.
Personally, as an Indian American living here for the past 6 years, India has taught me to find beauty in the little things, in the quaint little streets, in its people and in its craziness. Each smile, each city and its unique culture, has taught me to find joy, to have patience, and to always look for the silver lining during life’s tremendous ups and downs.
• India is where I fell in love for the first time and where I found the strength to come out to my parents despite the enormous challenges of coming from a conservative Desi community.
• India is where I got to work with one of the best men and composers I have ever known, A.R. Rahman.
• India was where I got to help build a music school from scratch
• India was where I earned the TED Fellowship and became a part of global progressive community that actively tries to make the world a better place.
So CHEERS to you, India, for making me the person I am today. Enjoy!
