Sonal Giani, an advocacy officer with the Humsafar Trust, and Upasana Naithani, a marketing professional, were friends before they started dating. When they met about a year ago, Giani was getting over the turbulent end of a previous relationship: her former girlfriend’s parents had pressured her into a heterosexual marriage, and Giani was determined to date only someone who was out, in the future. “But you can’t really decide who you are going to fall in love with,” she said.
