Cure For Just Rs.2100!

Dr.Dilbag’s clinic has a team of “qualified” and “professional” Ayurvedic and Homeopathic doctors, who can cure homosexuality and other sexual problems. They have branches in Delhi and Amritsar (Gaysis from Delhi, please see what these guys are upto).

Unfortunately doctors like Dilbag are not a rarity. Unethical medical practices, including conversion therapies, are prescribed and administered by several qualified doctors across India. These doctors let their personal belief systems and judgments get in their way of offering proper medical advice, and claim a person’s sexual orientation can be changed.

Yes. For Rs. 2100, Dr. Dilbag will send medications that he claims will cure homosexuality with no side effects within 30 days!

On his website here is what, Dr. Dilbag says

These doctors let their personal belief systems and judgments get in their way of offering proper medical advice, and claim a person’s sexual orientation can be changed.

Dr. Shanti Davidar, a leading psychiatrist from Chennai, compares homosexuality to alcoholism and domestic violence.  She was challenged by Gay rights activist Sunil Menon in a live debate hosted by NDTV Hindu.  Dr. Davidar was not hesitant about her claims and insisted that she has cured several homosexuals.  When asked about the details of the treatment, however, she said it is confidential. Appalling! Isn’t it?

The Delhi High Court’s historic July 2nd, 377 judgment decriminalizing same-sex acts has brought homosexuality out of the Indian closet.  Indian parents now hear “Mom, Dad, I am Gay” more than ever.  Often their first reaction is to contact a nearby psychiatrist, hoping he or she will be able to cure their son or daughter’s homosexuality.

While the American Psychiatric Association (in 1973) and the World Health Organization (in 1981) have declared that homosexuality is not a disease or a disorder, the Indian Psychiatric Society (IPS), the largest group of Psychiatrists in India, does not have an official stand on homosexuality.  Dr. Prabha S Chandra from National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHAANS) has written an article stressing the need for IPS to take a clear stand and also demanding IPS to carry an affirmative statement on homosexuality on their website.

In October 2009, Orinam.net, a Chennai based LGBT resource website, launched an online signature campaign called “Campaign for Open Minds” to counter the LGBT phobia prevalent in the Indian medical community. Several leading doctors from India, including big names like Dr.Vijay Nagaswami, Dr.Suresh Kumar and Dr.Prabha S Chandra have signed the campaign extending their support to the LGBT community and condemning unethical, biased, and discriminatory medical practices.

These individuals make a huge difference in the Indian medical community, but it is very critical for the well being of the Indian LGBT community that IPS take a stand on this issue. IPS should also declare medical practices like conversion therapies (including electric shock therapies) unethical and unscientific.

As Dr. Prabha S Chandra says, “The Court judgment has brought down a wall. It is now the responsibility of mental health professionals to reach out, walk over the debris and help build a shelter for those who need it.”

  1. Thanks for the heads up Shri. People like this don’t seem to learn from all the negative evidence out there on those who have been part of such ex gay programs. How hard is it for people like this to just read a bit wider and see that homosexuality is part of nature and was a recognised 3rd nature in ancient indian even? Are they this insecure about us?
Is this guy a medical doctor or is he doctor by Phd. By the homeopathic and ayurvvedic advice he doesn’t seem to be a biomedical doctor..otherwise he would know medical associations condemn this changing. In Australia at least 8 years ago we had a lesbian doctor who was head of the Australian medical association and numerous countries have LGBT medical association with spokespeople. We need some LGBT people in India and even some lgbt or gay friendly doctors in India to rebutt this guy and show that he is wrong to the masses. I know of quite a few Indian LGBT doctors here and in India..it could make an impact

    • @Neela Aasman : Thanks for your response.

Dr.Dilbag’s clinic does have a MBBS doctor. I am not sure about the treatment though, may be it is homeopathic. He as a degree in homeopathy. Even then, he can’t claim something that is not true.
On the other hand, Dr.Shanti Davidar is qualified Psychiatrist and she is also well known in Chennai. Her claims that sexual orientation can be changed has been thoroughly discredited by modern science, but she doesn’t care.

Indian medical community is very ignorant when it comes to LGBT issues. It doesn’t help that IPS doesn’t have a stand on homosexuality.

Few LGBT friendly doctors have written articles in favor of the community, check it out

But a lot needs to be done!

I am glad you are willing to help. Please spread the word among your contacts and request them to sign the campaigns at http://orinam.net/campaigns/

If you have more ideas, please share.

  2. It is disgusting that doctors like Dr Dillbag (or ratbag more like it) and Dr Ashanti exist to provide chaos and confusion in people’s lives. India’s psychiatry association (should if it has not already) condemn this as should the Indian medical association.

  3. Dilbag is a moron. The illegitimacy of this practice just points to larger issues in India such as ignorant quacks being allowed to provide “treatment” to patients.

I saw the Shanti Davidar interview and it irked me to no end – its like “wow. you are so …. clueless and you are a ‘professional’ ?” Apalling is more than accurate, Shri !

    Thanks for sharing!

  4. Can’t agree more QC.

    1) Dirtbag’s clinic has doctors who are qualified to practice medicine :

    Dr. N. K. Dhamije (G.A.M.S.) (Ayurvedacharya) (Delhi)
    Dr. Sanjeev Kumar (M.B.B.S.) (Delhi)
    Dr. S. P. Singh (B.H.M.S) (Delhi)
Dr. C. Kumar (B.A.M.S) (Ayurvedacharya) (Amritsar)
    Dr. G. Singh (D.H.M.S.) (Amritsar)
Dr. S.K. Nanda (B.I.M.S) (Ayurvedacharya Dhanwantri) (Delhi)

    2) Dr. Shanti Davidar is a leading psychiatrist from Chennai who is quite well known and also have received awards for public service (!!) and all that.

Their claims that sexual orientation can be changed is outrageous! We are not talking about some small scale, fake doctors here. LGBT phobia in Indian medical community is very REAL and SCARY.

I have heard about a case in Chennai – A young gay man came out to his parents, who both are doctors. They made him go through conversion therapy (electrical shock therapy) hoping his sexual orientation will change. He was then forced to marry as well. Nothing changed and the trauma he went through haunts him for the rest of his life.

What is Indian Psychiatric Society (IPS) waiting for? More gay people to go under electric shock I guess!
