Since 2008, Queer Azaadi Mumbai (QAM), which is a collective of organisations and individuals that work towards LGBTQA rights, have been organising the Queer Azaadi March, or Pride March, in Mumbai each year. By addressing issues varying from the insensitive depiction of queer individuals in media to organizing community events that address awareness issues, QAM has been working hard towards freeing the Indian society from the clutches of homophobia.
The march usually begins from Gowalia Tank (popularly known as August Kranti Maidan) and ends at Girgaum Chowpatty. The march itself is only one aspect of a month-long festivities and events across the city, from movie screenings, and plays to drag shows, and street performances. However, if you are a first-timer, or someone who needs a helping hand navigating through the Pride Month, we’ve got your back:
What?
The Pride March is a march for LGBTQ rights. It has been gaining a lot of momentum over the years and it has been making great efforts at making the lives of the LGBTQA community better. The theme for this year is #377QuitIndia.
When?
The march is slated to occur this on February 3, Saturday beginning at 2:00pm. However, there is more to the Pride Month than the march itself. Scroll down to see the schedule for the month, starting tomorrow. There are some super exciting panel discussions, and even some events where you can let your inner sports(wo)man out. Go ahead, and register if you haven’t already!
Where?
Though the march will start off from the August Kranti Maidan, the other events will be taking across the city, so there might be at least one event taking place close to you.
Who?
Are you a member of the LGBTQA community? Are you an ally? Are you just someone looking to learn more about the community? It doesn’t matter who you are, you are welcome. The Pride month has been created to not only provide a platform for the community, but also to educate and take the fight forward. Come show your support!
Things To Remember:
If you want to go for the march, and this is your first time, you might have a few questions, so we decided to go ahead and answer a few for you. Of course, there is a lot we can’t help with– like making the tough choice between QPL and Anubhav. But, here are some of the things we could guide you through.
Should I wear a costume?
Apparently this is one of the most common doubts among first-timers and if this has been on your mind, we are here to tell you: No. If you want to dress up, go for it! Pride is for everyone, so if you don’t feel comfortable dressing up, don’t. Just show up.
How do I choose between events?
That’s a tough one, and honestly, we wouldn’t know what you would enjoy. So do a little research. Head on over to QAM’s Facebook page where they talk in greater detail about the various events and make up your mind.
Do I need to register for the events in advance?
You are free to attend most events, without registering ahead, but if you wish to take part in the QPL or Flick It, you do need to register in advance.
Should I bring anything?
Not really. Maybe, a bottle of water. But, mostly just an open mind and your support.
Is there any other way I can show my support?
There sure is! This is the 10th Pride March and in order to make this a success, it needs a lot of support from well-wishers all around. Every contribution, however small, counts.
