Godrej hosts a special event Dancing Queens: a celebration of India’s Transgender Communities, during Transgender Awareness Week
In April 2014, the Indian Supreme Court granted legal recognition to the Third Gender community, a formative moment in the history of the world’s largest and youngest democracy. At this crucial juncture, it is imperative to have conversations surrounding the basic needs, professional aspirations, and empowerment of the transgender community. On November 18, which happens to fall within Transgender Awareness Week in the US, the Godrej India Culture Lab will host a performance by India’s leading transgender-led professional dance troupe – Dancing Queens. Held on the campus of one of India’s largest major companies, the purpose of this event will be to build a dialogue between the corporate, non-profit, and creative industry sectors to highlight the ways we can create real, tangible change for members of the transgender community.
The Dancing Queens is a professional, transgender-led dance troupe based in Mumbai that seeks to empower its members through cultivating employment and cultural initiatives that aligned with the goals of India’s LGBTIQ liberation movement. The Godrej India Culture Lab is an experimental cultural space located at the Godrej campus in Mumbai that programs film screenings, performances, and scholarly talks that exemplify what it means to live in contemporary India. Even though we have a history of engaging themes of Gender & Sexuality in our programming, this event will mark the first time ever that a transgender-led dance troupe has visited our campus.
