Marriage Equality in Italy

The chances of marriage equality in Italy are a distant hope, but it doesn’t mean that the community won’t fight for it. With the Vatican and the Pope and the crazy orthodox Catholics, same sex marriage will not see the light of day any time soon.

Still, there are some people who believe and won’t back down on the fight for their rights. Arcigay, a non-profit organization for the LGBT community of Italy, recently released a video promoting same sex marriage.

In the video are two gay men who are seen sharing their lives together, rallying at pride and eventually getting engaged and married. At their wedding reception you see a lesbian, inspired by the gay friends, finally propose to her girlfriend. Edited beautifully to leave almost anyone with a sunny feeling in their heart, the video aims to portray equality, and not just marriage equality.

Same sex couples are not legally recognized in Italy, and even a civil union is a distant thought. According to Pope Benedict XVI, same sex marriage is one of the most “insidious and dangerous’” threats facing the world.

It’s a very sad state of affairs for a country as beautiful as Italy. Wouldn’t you love to retire in the Italian country side, eating delectable food and lovely wine alongside your hot Italian girlfriend/boyfriend?
