Over the years, many TV serials and movies have been made in India on group of boys or girls but homosexual characters were ignored like they didn’t exist in the society. Recently Viacom18 launched ShaadiBoys and Bindass brought The Trip and these are stories with multiple characters. There were chances where queer characters could have been used as the representers of the community, but unfortunately no one has given thought to this idea.
Homosexuals were starving for the entertainment of their kind and Ekta Kapoor came as the saviour. With the story of desi Gay Romeo and Juliet her newly launched video streaming platform AltBalaji is already winning hearts of LGBTQ and she doesn’t stop there.
If you think that Romil and Jugal is the only web-series from the house of AltBalaji that glorifies The Great India Gay Men, then you are wrong. Another web-series titled Boygiri that is currently streaming on Kapoor’s digital platforms has an interesting gay twist in the story. The show is fun, pure, unadulterated, slaphappy comic story of boys next door. It is an authentic take on (the unfortunate notion) men will be boys and the overarching awkwardness of being boys.
Directed by theatre producer, film and TV writer Akarsh Khurana Boygiri revolves around the lives of six Indian men and out of these six; one protagonist is a happy gay man. Divyang Thakkar, Amey Wagh, Adarsh Khurana, Ajit Singh, Chaitanya Sharma, Abir Abrar, Rashi Mal and Mantra Mugdh play the show’s pivotal characters.
Manjot played by Adarsh Khuarana represents that gay guy in a straight group in metro city. It’s a realistic character many homosexual men can form an instant connect with. The character was introduced with a poster in which Manjot has is seen wearing a suit with Spiderman boxer along with an appealing quote “I don’t bite; not unless you want me to.”
