ALSO, not that this is all that relevant to the music, but my broken heart is broken no longer! My lady and I are together again and doing fine – we just went though a mild rough patch, which admittedly felt like the end of the world, but we’re all better, which means I’m totally in the zone to bring y’all some lovely love songs.

M-Zee has returned…

1. Hello (Out Now) – Martin Solveig & Dragonette

Yeah I think you’re cute, but I really think that you should know.
I just came to say hello, hello, hello, hello.”

Okay, so I know the title of this article is “Love Songs for Lesbians”, and maybe this isn’t the most relationship-oriented song, but sometimes you need a song to tell a lady that you just think she’s cute and that’s it. And this is that song! The techno-y beat makes it fun to dance to, and it’s just so upbeat and light that you can’t help but get it stuck in your head. For when you’re not looking for love, but you want to pique a lady’s interest…this is the song you should put on her mixtape.

2. Then If I’m Weird, I Want to Share – Tender Forever *

“people would say
maybe I’m gay
maybe I’m weird
but actually I just don’t care
and if I’m weird I want to share”

Ahhh, Tender Forever. Not only is she delicious looking, but she also has some great music. She’s coming out with new stuff soon, too! And I love her lyrics. I especially love “and if I’m weird, I want to share”. Because who isn’t a little weird? And it’s always lovely to have someone to share our weirdness with. Admittedly, I creep on Tender Forever’s facebook often. Tender Forever is full of great queer-themed music, and definitely worth a (lot of) listen(s).  I saw her live a couple of weeks ago, and oh my god…my crush on her grew exponentially. She’s even more attractive in real life.

3. Little bit – Lykke Li

“I think I’m a little bit, little bit, a little bit in love with you

But only if you’re a little bit, little bit, in l-l-l-love with me too, oh”

I feel like that is the sweetest feeling – in the beginning of a relationship, when you know that your significant other sets your heart aflame but it’s just too early to say anything, to put words to what you feel…but if they said it first, you’d say it back. Lykke Li has a voice that’s both breathy and strong at the same time, and I feel like this song is perfect for a relationship in its first stages. While Lykke Li is not queer, the song never refers to gender, so it still works perfectly.

4. Map of Tasmania – Amanda Palmer*

I say grow that shit like a jungle
Give ‘em something strong to hold onto
Let it fly in the open wind
If it get too bushy, you can trim”

Okay, okay, so this isn’t a love song either. It’s more of an ode to hair down there. BUT, it’s fun, and if you want to have a discussion about pubes with your partner…there is literally no better conversation starter than this music video filled with merkins. And if your love is fun and flirty (and shouldn’t all loves be fun and flirty?), then you’re bound to make them smile by playing this song for them.

Also, Amanda Palmer is a badass.

5. Dog Days are Over – Florence + The Machine

And I never wanted anything from you
Except everything you had and what was left after that too, oh”

I love this song. Strong female vocals always make me happy, and nothing describes Florence + The Machine better than strong female vocals. It’s eclectic English pop, and what’s better than that? Especially when it comes to l-o-v-e. And I love the theme of the song – the dog days are over because you’ve finally found someone who makes you super duper stoked about everything.

6. Company – An Horse*

My face has turned red
But it
’s not from something you just said
Oh I
’m blushing on the inside
’s those damn green eyes”

I was lucky enough to get to see An Horse live, and what an amazing show. An Horse is composed of a guy and a girl. The lady half, Kate Cooper, is also the homo half, and she is scrumptious. A lot of An Horse’s songs are filled with messages of love and longing, but “Company” just makes me smile.

7. Vulnerable – Sarah Jaffe*

“Wake me up just to call me
Sleeping beauty
Oh fine
’s fine
I got my hands up
’m feeling vulnerable”

This song is too cute. I think one of my favorite things about being in a relationship is watching the other person sleep, and that feeling is what this song makes me think of. That, and the feeling of being vulnerable, as the title would indicate. There’s something humbling in knowing you’re voluntarily giving someone else so much power over you just by loving them. Plus, Sarah Jaffe is gorgeous, and I love her voice.

8. This tornado loves you – Neko Case

“I miss, I miss, I miss, I miss, how you’d sigh yourself to sleep
when i’d rake the springtime
across your sheets”

Okay, so this song is admittedly not the happiest in the world – but I think it still qualifies as a love song. Neko case is one of my absolute favorite singer/songwriters, and this song is my favorite one of hers. She sings from the point of view of being a tornado – being destructive and terrible but only out of love. Maybe it’s just me, but I feel like that’s so relevant to real life – when you want someone so badly that you’d contemplate all sorts of nutso things to just get them to love you back. This song is so heartfelt that you can just hear all the love that Neko Case has poured into these lyrics.

9. The only exception – Paramore

“And I’ve always lived like this
keeping a comfortable distance.
And up until now I’d sworn to myself
that I’m content with loneliness.
Because none of it was ever worth the risk.
Well, you are the only exception.”

The first time I heard this song, I totally melted – and with any luck, your beloved will too. It’s just so cute! It’s so easy to be disillusioned by love, especially when we get our hearts broken, but then you find someone who’s “worth the risk” and nothing could be sweeter.

10. Suddenly I see – KT Tunstall

You can see she’s a beautiful girl
She’s a beautiful girl
And everything around her is a silver pool of light
The people who surround her feel the benefit of it
It makes you calm
She holds you captivated in her palm”

So KT Tunstall is not openly queer…but good god, she has to be a homo! I mean, I know the song is about “this is what I wanna be”, and maybe she’s talking about personality…but I can’t help but think she’s totally talking about sexuality. The video even has rainbows in it! I mean, I’ve admired other women’s’ personalities, but I sure as hell didn’t use phrases like “silver pool of light” and “captivated in her palm” to describe someone’s personality. Okay, fine, I probably did, but that was when I was in my pre-queer days, before I would ever openly admit attraction to another woman, and instead would want to be just like them and want to be their best friend. Which is basically what this song is about, right? After all, we aspire to be what we desire.

That just rhymed. Maybe I should be a singer/songwriter myself and write songs for the homo world – obviously I have rhyming talents already.

As a sidenote, I’m crazy for lesbian covers of Justin Timberlake songs. If someone wanted to seduce me, they’d just have to get a guitar and learn a JT song. There’s the Kaki King one in the list, but also another I didn’t list it because I can’t ever find it to download – “My Love” by Tender Forever. Seriously, seriously beautiful stuff. (Gah, Tender Forever, marry me already?)

That said, good luck seducing your respective ladies with these awesome songs!
